Even if you had your head in the sand and didn't know about Maki (like me!), then it would have been SUPER CLASSY to immediately switch to something else when called on it. Maybe it would have been interesting to see Messier in a #1 jersey? Anybody other than goalies ever do that?

Anyway...I'm not a Messier fan either. I never got the "best leader" crap either.
AvenueDavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11410527962292190560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7677709835426556589.post-55122117910944116762013-12-04T11:13:31.190-07:002013-12-04T11:13:31.190-07:00Thanks for the book. It was a better read than I had anticipated.

Wayne Maki was a Vancouver Canuck in the early 70's for a couple seasons (leading the team in scoring for a couple of years). A brain tumor was discovered in him in 1972 and he passed away in '74. The Canucks unofficially retired his number 11 soon after.

When Messier joined the Canucks, neither he nor the Canucks reached out to Maki's family when Messier expressed his desire (and I use that term loosely) to wear the number 11. Maki's widow and son did not give their blessing and felt a bit betrayed by Messier and the Canucks.

Messier did nothing.....he played dumb about the whole thing.

Leader? I think not.

http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/sports/mark-controversy-maki-widow-son-peeved-11-article-1.777378

That one incident left a pretty lasting impression on my feelings towards Messier.bamlindenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18144916743107134577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7677709835426556589.post-35452911809088785532013-12-04T06:25:16.776-07:002013-12-04T06:25:16.776-07:00Sweet review!
