RATE MY MASK - Tim Thomas

Well, I've got a new feature I'm going to start. It's a pretty simple one, but it satisfies my need to do customs (temporarily) as well as show off some cool goalie masks.

'Rate My Mask' is a pretty simple concept. I'll show you a mask - and you rate it.

We're going on a scale of 0 to 5 (half points allowed), zero being the worst and five being the best.

Tell me why you like it or why you hate it. Simple as that.

Ready.....here goes!

This mask is my favorite mask unveiled this season (and one of the coolest I've seen in quite some time).

If you look carefully at Tim's mask, you’ll see that the Bear from last season’s mask is still there – but hidden in shades of grey (very 'outside the box').

The Bruins logo from the front of his older mask has been replaced with a representation of the medallion he wears around his neck. The chin has Tim’s 'TT' logo on it and he has changed the back plate from the “Beware Of Bear” logo to an American flag with ”Don’t Tread On Me".

Designed by Steve Nash (no, not that one) of eyecandyair.com, the white was chosen as the base color because goalies have gone towards white for equipment in general (it makes the goalie seem bigger).

So when a goalie wearing white says "Do I look fat in my equipment?", you can say yes....and he will surely be happy.

I give this mask a 4 out of 5.

So, now it's your turn. Rate My Mask!

  1. I have to disagree. I like the concept, but it's hard to read, so to speak, from any distance. I give the mask a 2.5.

  2. I'll go the opposite. I was going to say 1, but I'll go 1.5 since you allow half points.
The mask is boring, and not the least bit intimidating. I went as high as I did for the originality of it.

  3. I hate this mask. First, it doesn't match with his uniform/equipement. Second, except by looking at it very intensivly, we can't see anything very clear. In my opinion, this is one of the worst mask in the NHL. 1/5.

By the way, that is a very good idea, I like it very much.

  4. I know you like it a lot but I'm going 2 out of 5. I'm not a fan of the all white. Throw some color on that mask! Thats my take.

  5. Interesting takes everyone. Thanks!

I will admit, it's a tough one when seeing him out on the ice playing. I guess having seen a number of high res. closeup photos, I've had the opportunity to check it out in detail and such.

Good points everyone. Looking forward to doing more!

  6. I give it a 4 out of 5 also. First of all, forget the design of the mask, and look at how it's built. The different model of outer shell and the different design of the cage is what I think all goalies should be switching to.

My buddy plays goalie and has the same mask as Thomas. When I tried it on I immediately said I will never switch back to the "original" masks. I can see better with my peripheral vision. And the holes at the eyes are larger and non obstructed. So that is a thumbs up.

As for the design I thought the colors were like you said "outside the box" and I commend him for that. It makes a fan look deeper into the mask and it's story instead of the usual bear on the side of the bruins mask that's roaring.

    Thumbs up for that

  7. Here I am, sneaking over to your blog this time. I have to participate in mask ratings, for sure!! ;o)

I'll give Tim a 3 out of 5 on this one. At first I had a real hard time figuring out what the design was...that's why I wouldn't go higher than 3. But when I compared to last season's mask, I totally saw it. And I love the white/grey coloring. It looks very clean. I prefer the "more white" trend for goalies. Their pads and gloves anyway. Looks so much better than colors.
