LINDEN CARD OF THE WEEK - 2010/11 Limited Monikers 1/1

Another mailday and this one brought another low...low....LOW numbered card to the Linden collection.

2010/11 Panini Limited
Monikers Platinum Autograph 1/1

That's right....cards /10, cards /5 and cards /3 lookout! Here comes a big boy to the party.

This is the fourth 'true' 1/1 to be added to my Linden collection. And while it may not have the flash and pizazz of the Ultimate Memorabilia Emblem I picked up a couple months ago, it's still a pretty major card to be added.

Now why is it that there seems to be a story to go along with a lot of the cards I have been picking up recently?

This one is all about the customs form and packaging.

You would think that a 1/1 card would warrant some sort of solid packaging. Not so. Just a flimsy piece of cardboard and a soft toploader was all that was separating this card from the beating the envelope took (and it was a little banged up when I picked it up).

To top it off, the customs sticker on the envelope indicated a value of just $5. Great, so if the card had of been damaged, the post office would have been on the hook for a lowly fiver.

I e-mailed the guy I bought it from and expressed my concern. I asked why he put $5 down for the value (when in actuality I paid a lot more). He said it was because 'everyone from Canada complains about taxes of some kind'. He was doing me a favor.

FYI....not everyone from Canada thinks this way. I am fully understanding that when I purchase an item from outside Canada I may be on the hook for some extra charges. By writing down the amount of money I actually paid for the card, you are giving me the proper protection should something happen to it. That to me is being a responsible seller.

If nothing else, some communication AHEAD OF TIME to give me a heads up to your thinking would have been appreciated and could have avoided this potential problem.

It is a nice card though...isn't it! :)

  1. 1 of 1… well now what the heck is everyone else supposed to do? Nice job jerk. Way to ruin it for everyone else.

JK, nice card. The foil surface on those cards always looks soo much better in hand. Congrats on a nice addition to your Linden collection.

  2. That's a very nice card, I can imagine your disappointment if it would have been damaged...

Such card should always be shipped in a screw loader.

It could be worse. I could have just tossed it in a box never to be seen. At least I scanned it for show & tell. :)

Thanks for the comment and you're right, it does look really nice in hand.

Definitely. A screw down (at very least) would have been appreciated.

The seller even said (when I confronted him) that he had a bunch of screwdowns and one-touch holders. All I needed to do was ask.

All I needed to do? I shouldn't have to ask.

  4. I've just started following your blog, gotta say I really enjoy reading it :)

Even though I gotta say I don't exactly enjoy reading about 1/1's since I assume that means there's only a single copy of that particular card.
I haven't collected hockey cards for the past decade, but I think I'm gonna start collecting again. Just too bad there's no way you'd be able to have a complete collection of a player these days...

  5. Thanks for the comment! I hope you continue to enjoy the blog.

1/1's are a bitter sweet aspect to the hobby in my opinion. It's great to have one, but you are right - there's no way to have a complete collection of a player.

It used to bother me a lot, but I discovered that (in my instance) the other Linden collectors are great guys and have an equal passion as I do. Getting to know them and getting to know what 1/1's they own is almost better than having the 1/1's. I've made some great hobby friends.

I've come to accept the fact and have even separated 1/1's from my wantlist. I am still on the lookout for them and I still list them in my master list, but I don't go on the hunt for them. I've just been in the right place at the right time with a couple of the ones I have.

    Thanks again!
