RATE MY MASK - Scott Clemmensen

I really enjoyed creating the card for my first 'Rate My Mask' post, so I decided to do another.

It gives me a great excuse to go through my hundreds of goalie mask photos that I've compiled digitally over the past 10 years of searching.

Not going too old yet (just wait though), but this mask is from a goalie who always has some nice lids.

I also made the photo a little higher res so that it's bigger when you click on it.

This mask is circa 2009. It's one of his early masks from when he left New Jersey and went to the Panthers.

Clemmensen's first Florida themed mask was too small for him and he ended up signing it and auctioning it for charity. Tropical-themed, it had puma-type cats all over in pastel colors.

This was the only pic I could find...and it was small.

Clemmensen changed things up and went with a more traditional Panther mask, one similar to the classic mask used by John Vanbiesbrouck back in the day.

I can definitely see the inspiration.

Clemmensen said he wanted to keep something similar to what he had in Jersey last year with the eyes on top and the big teeth on the front.

Overall, I really like the bold, thick colors. I also like the row of teeth along the bottom (better than Beezer's if you ask me). It's not super-detailed and I think that's what makes this work.

3 out of 5.

OK....your turn. Rate My Mask!

  1. I like this one, as it leaves no doubt who he plays for and can likely be seen from the nosebleeds (where we always sit).

The simple, yet bold design earns a 3 from me, too.

  2. Ehh...

He went for the one themed mask, which can be very well done. But I find it a little cartoonish. To tell you the truth I like Vanbiesbrouck's mask better. I like it when goalies add a different color cage than the regular white or black.

    Average, so I give it a 2.5

  4. I've never been a fan of the "open mouthed animal" masks. Doesn't translate very well for me for some reason.

    1 out of 5.

  5. I'll give this a 3. Solid, bright colours without being too complicated.

  6. I'll give this one a 2 out of 5. I really like the concept. I've always been a big fan of the "mask art swallowing the goalie's head" designs. And I know he doesn't have a choice of colors, if he's going to stick with his team colors. So I shouldn't judge him on that. But these colors bug me. Blech. And if I don't like the colors, I just can't get behind the mask. But I like the idea.

Sorry for using the word "colors" way too much, but it was necessary.
