OPINION: SAYING WHEN

Well, there's a new product release out this week.....Panini's high-end 'Dominion' cards are making a number of people drool over the sneak peeks so far.

I was one of them. I was really looking forward to seeing some of the cards they would be coming up with.

Day one of the product going live and this arrives on ebay...

This quad auto featuring Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman is numbered to just 5.

It's a gorgeous card, but it immediately makes me ask - "Why is Trevor Linden on this card?"

I would like to think that he is in the same league as these first ballot HOF'ers....but he's not.

Seeing this card makes me start to question just how much more of these ultra-rare high-end Linden gems I can go after.

FYI, the auction is just on for 24 hours and is already up over $300. I'm expecting the final price to be over $500.

I realize I've spent some big bucks in the past for some high-end cards, but it's starting to become more of the norm to see cards go for over $100, $200 even $400 bucks.

I don't know if I can realistically go after them.

So I ask myself - "Can I live with the fact that there will be some Linden cards that will just never be pursued?" "What do I want my collection to become?" And most importantly "In the midst of all of these cards coming out....am I still having fun?"

Maybe after the hype of Dominion's release has gone down I will feel a little more secure in my collecting, but right now I feel a little unsure as to what I want out of this hobby.

I've never had a card do that to me before.

It must be a special card indeed.

  2. There comes a point where you just have to say no. I walked away from the whole thing for a number of years when it just became too oppressive and finally made the call that I wasn't going to collect a single set from this coming season when normally I do 2-3.

I've never really been a player collector per se, but I do vintage. I look at the high dollar Orr autos and that sort of thing and simply wash my hands of them. I might get one. Eventually.

  3. When I saw this on their (Panini's) video break of a couple of boxes, I thought of you. I feel like they included Linden just to spite you as I'm not entirely sure what all of these guys have in common.

I have just now begun amping up my PJ Axelsson collection and I thank the good lord that he was a marginal player with not a lot of high end cards. Then again, I see some of the stuff you grab of Linden's and am blown away by their uniqueness and beauty.

To me, this card is a $300 card that you may be able to snag for $250 in a couple of years, granted you can track one down.

  4. I've seen a few people posting the same kind of stuff about that card. I understand how you feel about the others on the card jacking the price up. There are a few Hasek/Howard cards I won't touch for the same reason. I'm actually contemplating excluding any kind of dual/triple etc. cards like that from my Howard PC wants.
